Curriculum Vitae of mr. Giampaolo Panza

Giampaolo Panza was born in Milan on 21st August 1945, where he lived and carried out all his studies until he graduated in Mechanical Engineering (doctor's degree) at Milan University "Politecnico", in 1969.

Member of the Order of Engineers, Milan N° 9482 since 1972 and Piacenza N° 877 since 1993.

On completing his military service as an officer in the army, he immediately entered the world of industry, where he covered responsible roles in company management and, over the years in diverse technological branches. This led him to rove in different sectors: from components for the motor industry to installation for sea bed dredging, from the pharmaceutical industry to that (last chronologically) of industrial doors, windows and shutters.

When, in 1984, Italian law n.818 and, the following year, its regulation were published, he realized the room created in Italy for professionals specialised in the field of fire prevention by the new prevention standards.

In 1986 he began working as an independent professional, creating a society ( FULCRO srl - now closed down since 2010 ) which gave him the opportunity to offer not only his professional skills but also, when necessary or required, the supplying of the materials and components necessary to guarantee the high quality of his projects.

In the following ten years, his work was requested and appreciated in numerous prestigious projects. To mention just a few:

  • Large office complexes ("Milano Oltre" at Milano-Segrate, "Corte Lambruschini" at Genova)
  • Buildings of Historical interest (Milan, the "Braidense" Library, the Observatory "Brera", the Scala Opera House, Leonardo's Last Supper)
  • Universities (Milan, Venice and Trieste)
  • Hospitals (Valduce of Como, Civil Hospital of Brescia)
  • Hotel Chains (Holiday Inn, Jolly Hotels, Novotel)
  • Store Chains ("Euromercato", "La Rinascente", "Standa")
  • Numerous works for Banks, Industry, Public Organisations

As a natural consequence of his professional activity connected to the use of products with peculiar characteristics of fire safety, towards the end of the 80's he became interested in technical standards and joined the UNI - Italian Organization for Standardization, and took an active part in the development of Italian standards associated to the testing methods for fire proof doors.

In the following years his interests in standards extended to the process to apply the "New Approach" European Standards (CE labelling for the products). He therefore took part in various UNI Commissions (Behaviour in Fire Scenarios, Products and Systems for the Building Industry, Security) and some of their working groups. Following this experience he attended, as Italian Expert, to the meetings of the corresponding CEN groups (the European Committee for Standardization). Covering this role he is attending 6 Working groups of CEN/TC127 (Fire Safety) and CEN/TC33 (Doors, windows, shutters, building hardware and curtain walling).

In 1996, asked by some garage doors producers, he founded ACMI (Assocostruttori Chiusure e Meccanismi Italia = Association of Manufacturers of Doors and their Components in Italy), an association which unites the manufacturers of fire resistant doors, of commercial, industrial and garage doors, of smoke and heat ventilators, aiming to assist its members to understand and apply the European standards and was nominated its operative vice-President. He held that position up to 2012 when, in consequence of major changes in the make-up of the members of the association and in their priorities, he broke away from that association.

In 2010 he, together with some colleagues engineers, shared the analysis of the enhanced problems in the profession of the engineers, such as the need of a permanent professional training, of preserving the level of the creation of the mind, of the compliance with professional ethics even in the competition. The analysis resulted in establishing the  Association of the Engineers of Piacenza of which he, together with other 10 colleagues, is Founding Father and Member of the Board of Directors and Secretary, staying in the latter office up to 2013.
